We are not currently a 501 c 3 organization. We have never been, and it has never been an issue for our donors. I will share with you that I recently applied for a 501 c 3 status for a different organization, and we were unsuccessful in having that application approved. The IRS has gotten much more strict with the approval of these applications. That being said, the application can be found online on the IRS web site. Best of luck to you. Our application was handled by the former president of the board who is an accountant. We obtained it in 2008. Our members felt that it was time to separate officially from the library which was still going through a lot of changes at the time.
